"My wife Nara and I Carlos Ferrandis consider ourselves to be part of a
different group of people. We love to travel, to meet different people,
learn about and experience new cultures and foods, Actually we don't care about sacifricing the comfort of our home in exchange for an adventure."
They are planning on leaving their home in Uruguaiana,RS Brazil, on March
16th 2003, to start living their own adventure, an around the world trip
by bicycle.
|
|

|
They know that the trip that they plan will not to be easy, but they are
anxious to start. The spirit of adventure spirit burns within them. "We could spend the next 30 years working, but we realize that we can help so much more the world and ourselves by accomplishing our dream: Traveling around the world in a healthy way by bicycle, learning about new cultures and places and retelling this adventure to those who want to hear". They
say over and over.
The planning of the first stage is almost finished, just a few small
details left. Starting on the way on march 16, 30,000 km from Rio Grande do Sul
to Alaska, passing through Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, USA, Canada and Alaska. They intend to spend 2 years pedaling without any kind of external staff to complete this first stage.
|
|
The starting point will be Uruguaiana. They will cross the
international border by the bridge to Argentina in direction of Salta (the Argentinean North), where they will enter Bolivia. During the winter, they will ride
Bolivia's highlands, at an altitude of 4,000 meters and temperatures
of -20° Celsius where they will experience the famous "Salar de Uyuni". Carlos and Nara will continue to La Paz, Bolivia's capital city. From there they will cross the Titicaca lake going to Cusco,
where they intend to visit the Machu Pichu ruins. Next heading East, they
will enter Brazil via Acre.
|
There they will descend the Madeira river until Manaus, where they will
bicycle to Venezuela. Next stop Cartagena Colombia; To cross the Darien
Gap they make their last boat trip. They will then bicycle through Central America, California, Canada to Alaska. Once in Alaska, they will cross the United States from NW to SE, "Our destination will be Florida, where we have some friends. There we will
finish the American part of the trip. Then we will cross the ocean,
probably to Morocco or Portugal to start the European stage of the trip, beginning our long way to the East, where we plan to see parts of Europe, Turkey, Iran, Russia, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, and finally, Australia, New Zealand", said Carlos.
"Recently we have been very busy, it seems there are so many things to do and we are overloaded. So many details, contacts, and emails to answer;
the list grows every day. Only 4 months left, and our only goal is to cross
the bridge that separates our city from the Argentina", says Carlos, who
doesn't mind all this preparation for the trip of a life time.
Healthy life
|
Carlos and Nara Ferrandis expect this bicycle trip to be a landmark. They also want to spread "the benefits of healthy living and values. It takes planning, study, and hard work for man to build a healthy relationship
with nature and himself. We can and must work for a better world. We hope
mankind won't destroy the planet, but this can only happen if we notice about the
need for change in time."

|
In order to achieve their goal, they have to show this project to as
much people as possible. They are looking forward to contact companies or
ogainizations interested in showing their support for ecological
politics "We pursue two points: make ourselves popular in order to publish one or
two books at the end of our adventure, and we are also looking for financial support to complete our project."
|
|
They are already in contact with some companies to spread the news about
their trip and to find the necessary equipment to send back their
reports. Their web site will be updated during each part of their adventure. But,
as Carlos says, they are still looking for sponsors:
"We are looking for enterprises, organizations and people that can contribute to complete our
adventure. Their contribution could be in the form of money, materials, equipment, media promotion, or help to build up and maintain our web site. Help may also be in the form of consulting
about many problems that we may experience during our trip. Help may also come
in the form of moral support, In fact, this will be the most appreciated benefit of the trip for us: new friendships".
